Adjustable Stone Macrame Pouch Necklace Tutorial

My latest craft obsession? Macrame! Specifically, adjustable stone macrame pouches, which are simply macrame pouches that you can open, and change out the contents.

I’ve been wanting one of these as a necklace for wearing crystals. Had I known they were so easy to make, I would have made them a lot sooner.

While I made many different versions during my learning phase (such as the image with the sparkly teal bead and white thread), there were only really 2 that actually were put to use.

One I made to hang crystals in the car. It was one of the first few pouches I attempted. It’s not perfect, but it works well for the car.

After a few more attempts I was able to make this — an adjustable macrame pouch necklace, with sliding adjustable knots, so that I can easily change the length of the necklace.

Do you want to try your hand at these neat, versatile adjustable macrame pouches? Here are the tutorials I used. Believe it or not, braiding the necklace cord was the longest part of the entire process.

***EDIT 1-26-15: These ARE NOT my tutorials, but the tutorials I used, which I thought I would share with you. If you have questions for the authors of the tutorials, please contact them directly through their pages. Thanks!***

Crochet Stones

I loved it so much, I had to try my hand at it.

First, I followed this tutorial from The Purl Bee, to make this: a crocheted necklace surrounding a tumbled piece of prehnite.

Once the stone was crocheted, I made the necklace using the following simple pattern:

Basic Crochet Necklace Cord Pattern

Chain 85 (or more, or less, depending on your desired length), turn

Chain 1, sc in each stitch across.

Tie off, hide ends.

If you want to try your hand at something different, all you have to do is find a crochet motif that you like. Create it until it fits the top of the stone to the edges, then decrease the remaining stitches until the piece fits snuggly around the stone.

Nero’s Post and Patch does a great job of explaining this process, so check out her tutorial for step by step pictures.

Upon seeing my first necklace, a friend wanted one of her own, and supplied a piece of Petalite for me to use. The stone was too pretty to completely cover up, so this was the end result.

The pattern on the back is the start of the Druid Motif from the book Crochet Stitch Motifs: 250 Stitches to Crochet by Erika Knight (pg. 212).

It’s almost done, just have to make the cord using the pattern listed above.
